Attorney General John M. Formella has identified five State Police officers who fired their weapons during an Aug. 12 incident in Keene that left a 57-year-old man dead.
The officers are Sgt. Nicholas Levesque, a 13-year veteran; Sgt. Noah Sanctuary (14 years); Sgt. Aramus Caraballo (10 years); Trooper Matthew Dushame (six years); and Trooper Jacob Hunt (three years).
David Ward, 57, died of multiple gunshot wounds in the evening shooting Tuesday, Aug. 12.
Ward was driving with an adult female passenger near a TD Bank in the area of West Street and Gilbo Avenue in Keene when officers stopped the car. The woman got out of the car but Ward remained inside, police said.
“Officers were informed that the male had a gun and later observed him with the firearm,” officials said.
A “prolonged standoff” ensued after Ward refused to disarm and get out of the vehicle, according to the release. Around 8 p.m., a State Police SWAT team surrounded the car and gunfire started, with multiple rounds striking an armored vehicle. The five state troopers fired their weapons, and Ward was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, Formella’s office said. Officials plan to release a report on whether the troopers’ use of deadly force was justified once the investigation concludes. No additional updates are expected until that report is made public, they said.
An armored vehicle equipped with a camera recorded the event and footage will be reviewed as part of the investigation.
